For, Cathy Norosky, art has always been a part of her life since she was a child. Great influences in her art were her grandmother, an artist and her brother, a metal smith. One day Cathy was looking at a magazine that was displaying gourd art and she decided to order a box of gourds. Cathy knew when she opened the box and saw all the |

different shapes and sizes that her passion for gourds was here to stay. “I enjoy the natural design that the mold and dirt leaves on the outside of the gourd.” Cathy says. I will spend several hours just looking at the gourd until a design takes shape. My husband calls it my “gourd staring” and he finds it quite humorous. I love working with a three-dimensional canvas. There are so many mediums that can be applied, such as wood-burning, carving and inlaying stone and glass. I will also add natural materials such as pine needles and philodendron sheaths to the rim of the gourd. As a self-taught gourd artist, Cathy Norosky, learned as much as she could about all the techniques that can be used. She has traveled to the Ohio Gourd Show and has met with renowned gourd artists from all over the United States. Cathy is a member of the Ohio Gourd Society and the American Gourd Society. She lives in Belpre, Ohio, with her husband, Glenn and her cats, Mimi and Cleo. |
